Thank You Day

May 9, 2007

It turns out that tomorrow is Official Thank You Day; at least according to American Greetings. I know this because I was trolling this site looking for something fun and easy to post. That’s where I found this meme called Wednesday Mind Hump. Here are the two questions for the day:

1. What is your favorite song with “Thank You” or “Thanks” in the title?
Maybe not my favorite, but surely the first song that came to mind was, and I quote, “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” recorded by Sly and the Family Stone in 1969. It was on the flip side of “Everybody is a Star”. It was Billboard’s #1 in February of 1970, and #402 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

I still have the greatest hits album on vinyl in addition to the cd my daughter and I bought a few years back. It’s just as good now as it was in 1970 when I was in high school. You might recognize some of the other tracks, if not this one.

  • I Want to Take You Higher
  • Everybody is a Star
  • Stand!
  • Life
  • Fun
  • You Can Make It If You Try
  • Dance To The Music
  • Everyday People
  • Hot Fun in the Summertime
  • M’Lady
  • Sing a Simple Song
  • Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)

Back in the day I convinced my parents to drive, and I did say drive, my teenage self to all sorts of places where I could hear local bands play the best music. I loved to dance and this was THE BEST music to dance to. One time I even convinced them to take me to Glen Park to campaign headquarters of Adam Benjamin, Jr. because the World Column was playing for a fund raiser. World Column was SO good. They had a kickass horn section and played all of the Sly Stone songs along with Ides of March and Chicago. This trip was particularly interesting because Benjamin was a Democrat and my parents were not. I still can’t believe they actually drove me there, dropped me off all by my lonesome, and then picked me up afterwards. That was something. I think I was probably around 14 years old. I danced until I was ringing wet and exhausted. It was the best of times.

2. Who do you want to thank, and why?
Thanks to my mom and dad falettinme be mice elf agin. And again, and again….

Wow, what a small world! Adam Benjamin was our/my lawyer during thet 1972 school strike. He was sharpe. He kept me and others out of jail. Because of that we were able to rock on to the settlement that has been a solid rock foundation for teacher labor in Merrillville Schools.

  4. Willi Says:

“Thank you for a life that I’d call happy
Overlooking all that we’ve been through
When It comes to loving I’ve been lucky
Everything I am I owe to you.”

    Thank You for a Life
    -Kris Kristofferson

  5. gawilli Says:

Her Indoors – that Jamelia song is really different. The roses advert is one I am not familiar with.

Jo – Sorry for that! We don’t need a brain pain… How’s this?
    Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.
    I’m thinking of the days,
I won’t forget a single day, believe me. -Ray Davies (The Kinks)

Daddy D – Bejamin was sharp and he was also an excellent advocate for Northwest Indiana. I didn’t know it then, but a few years later I did. We have missed him.

Willi – and thank you for a life. We are very lucky.

  7. dilling Says:

Is this contrite? Honestly, in a family that didn’t teach me much of what I needed to make it through, I relied heavily upon my friends….. and I know it was overplayed on the radio for years…and years…but it strikes something in me… I want to thank them all….my friends….
    “Wind Beneath My Wings”

    Ohhhh, oh, oh, oh, ohhh.
It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that’s your way.
You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Did you ever know that you’re my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I’ve got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.

Did you ever know that you’re my hero?
    You’re everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

Did I ever tell you you’re my hero?
You’re everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings,
’cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

Oh, the wind beneath my wings.
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.

Fly, fly, fly high against the sky,
so high I almost touch the sky.
    Thank you, thank you,
thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.

  8. gawilli Says:

Happy Nurse’s Day, Cazzie, and Mother’s Day as well. I know your beautiful children will make a nice day for you today!

Dilling, Wind Beneath My Wings has always reminded me of my mom. It must be wonderful to have friends that meant so much. Thanks for bringing this song around!
